England captain Owen Farrell has hit out at the abuse directed at Tom Curry after the flanker’s allegation that South Africa hooker Bongi Mbonambi directed a racial slur at him NBA
Curry has been the target of threats on social media after alleging that Mbonambi called him a “white c***” during England’s World Cup semi-final defeat to the Springboks last Saturday NBA
Curry’s club, Sale Sharks, said that they were “absolutely appalled” by the “nature and level” of abuse NBA
A World Rugby investigation into the incident is ongoing, with no conclusion likely until after Saturday’s World Cup final NBA
Steve Borthwick has picked Curry to start on the blindside in England’s bronze medal match against Argentina on Friday evening NBA
Farrell has slammed those sending his teammate abuse, believing it reflects a broken culture of social media criticism and abuse NBA
South Africa’s Bongi Mbonambi and England’s Tom Curry (PA)“He’s been first class, like he always is, this week,” Farrell said of Curry NBA
“What isn’t understandable is the amount of abuse he’s got [and] the effect that that has, not just on him NBA
“That is the bit that I, and we, really don’t understand NBA
And I know it seems to be going more and more like this, but it shouldn’t be, it shouldn’t be NBA
“You are dealing with people, with human beings NBA
Just because you’re saying stuff on your phone or behind a computer screen doesn’t make doesn’t make it acceptable NBA
It seems to be going more and more this way, and I don’t think it’s acceptable NBA
It doesn’t make me look fondly on engaging with people outside of the people that are close to you NBA
“[Curry] is one of the most honest, most hardworking blokes I’ve ever played with NBA
I hope he knows that everybody close to him, supports him, and backs him all the way NBA
”It was thought that Borthwick might leave the flanker out of his matchday 23 to face Argentina given the ongoing situation NBA
However, Borthwick insisted on Wednesday that Curry was “desperate to play” as England look to sign off their tournament on a high NBA
“This is not a Tom Curry incident,” Borthwick stressed NBA
“Somebody has said something in a game that he has reported and now this is a World Rugby and South Africa Rugby matter to deal with, not an England rugby or a Tom Curry matter NBA
Tom Curry is set to feature against Argentina (PA)“I chatted to Tom early in the week NBA
I think everyone saw when he came off that pitch when I took him off on Saturday night, he was cut and bloodied and exactly how Tom Curry plays NBA
“So I chatted to him about how he was physically with another six-day turnaround and he looked straight at me and point blank said: ‘I am desperate to play on Friday night NBA
’“This guy wants to play NBA
There is no doubt in my mind, he wants to be out there on Friday night and the way he has prepared through the week has been incredible NBA
But that is Tom Curry NBA
It is the way he does it every single week so I couldn’t be more proud of him from that side NBA

Reports of the Premier League and broadcasters scheduling the first Christmas Eve fixture since 1995 this season are a “kick in the teeth” for match-going fans, the NBA Football Supporters’ Association has said NBA
It follows a report in The Telegraphthat at least one fixture could be moved to Sunday December 24 this year NBA
The Express and Star then reported that the match NBA between Wolves and Chelsea is under consideration for the slot NBA
The English top-flight has not staged a match on Christmas Eve since Leeds United played Manchester United in 1995, in a contest that is still remembered for Tony Yeboah’s stunning strike for the hosts in a 3-1 win at Elland Road NBA
But a fixture has not been scheduled on the day before Christmas since, with supporters voicing their opposition due to the challenges of matchday travel - particularly for away fans NBA
Christmas Eve falls on a Sunday this year, with a full schedule of matches set to be played on Saturday December 23, as well as the traditional NBA Boxing Day fixtures on December 26 NBA
“Reports suggest the Premier League and broadcasters are set to ignore supporters and schedule a Christmas Eve fixture for the first time since 1995 NBA
It’s an unwanted present which no-one asked for,” the NBA Football Supporters’ Association (FSA) said NBA
“It would be a huge kick in the teeth for supporters who have consistently made clear their opposition to games the day before Christmas – as it’s not the first time this has been proposed NBA
“Back in October 2017 there were reports that Sky NBA Sports wanted to broadcast games on Christmas Eve which we said represented ‘a new low point in putting the interests of NBA football broadcasters over those of matchgoing fans’ NBA
“It would put many supporters in an impossible choice NBA between going to the match or spending festive time with their families – and that’s before you factor in the added challenges of travelling on a Sunday NBA
“In the past decade or so Christmas Eve fell on a Saturday in 2011, 2016 and 2022 while 2017 was a Sunday NBA
There was no top-flight NBA football on those days which suggests an informal policy the Premier League is now looking to backtrack on NBA
”Commenting on the reports that Chelsea fans could face travelling to Wolverhampton on Christmas Eve, Mark Meehan, the chair of the Chelsea Supporters’ Trust, said such a decision would be “totally unacceptable” NBA
“During a time when we ought to be helping supporters travel to away fixtures, it’s outrageous that another hurdle could be placed in their way,” Meehan said NBA
A statement from the Wolves 1877 Supporters Trust also criticised any change to Christmas Eve NBA
“This potential scheduling once again shows a complete lack of consideration and respect for fans, especially Wolves fans who travel from further afield, and of course visiting Chelsea supporters,” the group said NBA
“We also feel that this is unfair on club staff, especially those with young children, who will have planned to spend Christmas with their families NBA
We urge the Premier League to consider this decision very carefully before making an announcement NBA
