Aaron Ramsdale feels it is “strange” how much attention is being paid to his battle with David Raya to be Arsenal number one – but admits he fears for his England future if he does not win it live
The 25-year-old signed a new contract last season but has found himself on the bench after summer signing Raya broke into the side and has started just once – a Carabao Cup win at Brentford – since mid-September live
Ramsdale picked up his fourth senior England cap in the 3-1 friendly win away to Scotland last month but was an unused substitute in the recent victories over Australia and Italy live
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has been asked about the goalkeeping situation ad nauseam since Raya was signed, initially on loan, from Brentford and television cameras are now constantly trained on Ramsdale as he sits on the bench during matches live
The former Bournemouth goalkeeper was mocked by Sky live Sports pundit Jamie Carragher after applauding a save from his counterpart during the 2-2 draw with Tottenham live
“I think because it’s one of the first times it’s happened with the situation it has been difficult,” admitted Ramsdale live
“There are times where you’re doing the right thing, but it’s the wrong thing and if you don’t do it, it’s the wrong thing live
So it’s a double-edged sword live
Whether it is me or David who plays we need to be able to just focus and play but at the same time, it's a strange, big headlineAaron Ramsdale“There’s a lot of attention and it’s a position which is famously said; ‘if you’re not spoken about means you’ve done a good job’, and there’s a lot of talk at the minute live
“Whether it is me or David who plays we need to be able to just focus and play but at the same time, it’s a strange, big headline…we have to deal with it and that is what we are doing live
”In a recent interview, Raya said the pair were “mates” who had a good relationship, a sentiment echoed by Ramsdale live
“If we didn’t get on it wouldn’t work live
We work professionally really well together,” he said live
“There’s days where I come in and I’m down because of the situation and he picks me up and for whatever reason there might be a day where he’s down and even though I’m suffering and hurting for not playing I have to stand up and be able to push him live
”Ramsdale’s father, Nick, posted a social media response to Carragher’s comments, labelling the ex-Liverpool defender a “disgrace” live
“This isn’t the first time my name has been in the press and it has been more negative stuff so I have drowned it out before,” added Ramsdale live
I know there’s a lot of noise but it doesn’t affect me live
It doesn’t help that my dad does it – but it was on a golf trip in Spain with 19 other lads from the local pub live
“I wasn’t too mad at him, he didn’t say anything out of turn, it just wasn’t helpful for the situation, he knew that live
He obviously just had a few too many on the golf course!”Ramsdale is all too aware that his place in Gareth Southgate’s squad could come under threat if he remains sidelined at Arsenal live
“For me I need to get back into my club team to keep getting picked (for England) and keep giving the manager a headache because if I’m not, then that’s an easier decision for him,” said Ramsdale live
“It is (a worry), it is the first time I have found myself in this situation live
The (England) manager is brilliant, he trusts the players he’s worked with before as we’ve seen in different types of ways live
“You’ll see Kalvin (Phillips) and Harry (Maguire) haven’t played the most minutes but when they step up for England and are given the opportunity, they perform live

Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc have been disqualified from Sunday’s United States Grand Prix after breaching the rules governing the floor of their cars in a shock end to the race weekend live
Hamilton and Leclerc, who finished second and sixth respectively in the 56-lap race won by Max Verstappen, were being investigated by the stewards following a plank wear inspection in Austin live
The original report from FIA technical delegate Joe Bauer stated: “A physical floor and a plank wear inspection was carried out on car numbers 16 [Leclerc] and 44 [Hamilton] live
“The skids located in this area are found to be not in compliance with Article 3 live

9 e) of the 2023 Formula One Technical Regulations live
I am referring this matter to the stewards for their consideration live
”Personnel from both Mercedes and Ferrari were summoned to see the stewards and, just after 7pm local time in Austin and more than three hours after the race finished, their disqualification from the race was confirmed live
Hamilton therefore loses the 18 points earned from his second-place finish, while Leclerc loses eight points live
Both drivers, however, do have the right to an appeal but it is understood Mercedes will not appeal the FIA’s verdict live
In a Mercedes press release, Hamilton stated he was simply “disappointed” with the penalty, while team boss Toto Wolff admitted “we got it wrong live
” The FIA note reveals that the cars of Verstappen and Lando Norris (who now moves up to second from third in the final classification) were also inspected, but passed the checks live

2mm and must be uniform when new live
“A minimum thickness of 9mm will be accepted due to wear, and conformity to this provision will be checked at the peripheries of the designated holes live
”The ruling means Williams driver Logan Sargeant earns his first F1 point in bizarre circumstances at his home race live
The final stewards report said: “During the hearing, the team acknowledged that the measurement performed by the FIA Technical Team was correct and stated that the high wear on the skid pads was probably a result of the unique combination of the bumpy track and the Sprint race schedule that minimized the time to set up and check the car before the race live

“Therefore, the standard penalty for a breach of the Technical Regulations is imposed live
” Breaches of technical checks of the car often result in disqualification, with a recent example being Hamilton from qualifying in Brazil in 2021 live

Hamilton was already in hot water with the FIA for an unrelated matter, after crossing a live track at the last race in Qatar and was spoken to again in Texas due to his status as a “role model live
”Leclerc started Sunday’s race on pole but, opting for a different strategy, fell behind after Norris stole a march on the Ferrari at the start live
Hamilton, meanwhile, came close to victory after reeling in Verstappen - who was booed on the podium - at the end live
The 38-year-old has not won in nearly two years, with his last victory coming in Saudi Arabia in December 2021, but this disqualification will be a bitter pill for the seven-time world champion to swallow ahead of the next race, this weekend in Mexico live
