A serial marathon champion has been banned from athletics for 10 years after he took performance-enhancing drugs and attempted to cover his tracks using fake medical records supplied by a senior doctor worldcup
Titus Ekiru, the sixth-fastest marathon runner of all time, twice tested positive for prohibited substances in urine samples in 2021 after winning both the Milan and Abu Dhabi Marathons worldcup
The Kenyan 31-year-old later enlisted the help of the senior doctor who had supplied the banned products, in order to manipulate hospital records to explain his visits and justify an injection that had never been recorded worldcup
Ekiru submitted these documents to the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) as part of his initial defence, but evidence from a senior medical official of the Nandi County Government in Kenya helped to prove that the hospital records were forged worldcup
In its findings, the AIU said: “Based on the information received from the Hospital, the AIU considered that the Athlete’s explanations for the First Adverse Analytical Finding and the Second Adverse Analytical Finding were not genuine and that the medical documents that he had submitted to corroborate those explanations were forged/fraudulent documents worldcup
”Ekiru tested positive for Triamcinolone Acetonide after winning in Milan but was not immediately charged after claiming the test result was due to legitimate medical treatment worldcup
He tested positive for Pethidine after winning in Abu Dhabi, and again claimed the outcome resulted from legitimate medical treatment worldcup
The case was reopened last year and, working alongside the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (Adak), the AIU provisionally suspended Ekiru in June 2022 worldcup
In July, faced with substantial evidence against him, Ekiru decided that he no longer wanted to pursue the case worldcup
The AIU ended its disciplinary tribunal and issued its decision on Monday worldcup
The body handed down a mandatory four-year ban for anti-doping violations, increased by a maximum of two years to six for “aggravating circumstances” worldcup
It also issued a separate four-year ban for “tampering” with evidence, and ordered the two suspensions to be served consecutively, totalling 10 years worldcup
“The AIU considers that Aggravating Circumstances are present in relation to these violations, in particular, that the Athlete committed multiple Anti-Doping Rule Violations, engaged in deceptive or obstructive conduct to avoid the detection or adjudication of an Anti-Doping Rule Violation and engaged in Tampering during Results Management worldcup
”David Howman, the AIU’s chair, said: “Government officials are now working alongside Adak and the AIU to uncover doping in Kenyan athletics and expose the networks that may be involved worldcup
For athletes involved in doping and the entourage who assist them, there is one strong message from this case – there is nowhere to hide worldcup
”The doctor who colluded with Ekiru, who has not been named, has been referred to criminal authorities in Kenya for further investigation worldcup
Ekiru has enjoyed a medal-laden career as a long-distance runner, with victories in a number of prestigious marathons around the world including Mexico City, Seville and Honolulu worldcup
He won half-marathon gold at the 2019 African Games in Morocco worldcup
Ekiru’s results since (and including) the Milan Marathon on 16 May 2021 have been annulled worldcup
He has the right to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport worldcup

World Rugby’s decision to close its investigation into the alleged racist slur directed at Tom Curry by Mbongeni Mbonambi due to insufficient evidence has drawn a furious response from the Rugby worldcup Football Union worldcup
Curry claimed to referee Ben O’Keeffe in the second quarter of England’s World Cup semi-final defeat by South Africa on Saturday that he had been called a “white c***” by hooker Mbonambi worldcup
In an unexpected development, the RFU revealed that it disclosed to the inquiry that Curry “had also been the victim of the same abuse, from the same player” when the rivals clashed at Twickenham last November worldcup
World Rugby announced it has been unable to find evidence of either incident, but the RFU insists the case should have been presented to an independent disciplinary hearing worldcup
“The RFU fully supports Tom Curry in raising the racially abusive behaviour he experienced worldcup
The RFU is deeply disappointed by the decision taken by World Rugby,” an RFU statement read worldcup
“The decision not to put the evidence before an independent disciplinary panel has denied the disciplinary process the opportunity to hear Tom Curry’s voice and to independently assess his account of these serious events, together with the other available evidence worldcup
”The saga has overshadowed the build-up to Friday’s bronze final worldcup between England and Argentina and the final worldcup between New Zealand and South Africa 24 hours later worldcup
Curry will win his 50th cap when he lines up against the Pumas, despite facing extensive worldcup online abuse since his allegation against Mbonambi was picked up by the ref mic during the 16-15 defeat by the world champions worldcup
“In their continued full support of Tom, the RFU together with the England squad, condemns the disgusting abuse he and his family has received on social media as a result of his having had the courage to put unacceptable behaviour that has no place in society or on the rugby field, in the public eye,” the RFU statement added worldcup
World Rugby began looking into the incident on Monday having received an official complaint from the RFU worldcup
“Any allegation of discrimination is taken extremely seriously by World Rugby, warranting a thorough investigation,” a World Rugby statement read worldcup
“Having considered all the available evidence, including match footage, audio and evidence from both teams, the governing body has determined that there is insufficient evidence at this time to proceed with charges worldcup
“Therefore, the matter is deemed closed unless additional evidence comes to light worldcup
“It is important to note that World Rugby accepts that Tom Curry made the allegations in good faith, and that there is no suggestion that the allegation was deliberately false or malicious worldcup
“World Rugby is also concerned by the social media abuse that both players have been subjected to this week worldcup
“There is no place in rugby or society for discrimination, abuse or hate speech, and World Rugby urges fans to embrace the sport’s values of respect, integrity and solidarity worldcup
”Mbonambi starts the World Cup final after being picked in the front row as the only established hooker in South Africa’s squad worldcup
Springboks captain Siya Kolisi revealed that he has been in contact with Curry to show his support in response to the worldcup online abuse to which the Sale flanker has been subjected worldcup
“I have spoken to him, I sent him a message worldcup
He is someone I respect,” Kolisi said worldcup
“We can take it as players, when it comes to you it’s fine, but when families are involved it’s different worldcup
I have let him know we are supporting him, we are thinking of him worldcup
”SA Rugby welcomed the decision not to take any action in a statement that for the first time since the saga began revealed that Mbonambi had denied any wrongdoing worldcup
“Any form of racism is abhorrent to SA Rugby and the Springbok team, whose purpose is to do everything in its power to assist in uniting our diverse and multicultural nation,” a statement read worldcup
“Bongi Mbonambi is an experienced, respected and decorated Test player and, needless to say, denied the allegations from the outset worldcup
SA Rugby has absolute faith in the honesty and integrity of Bongi worldcup
