UFC contender Ian Machado Garry has said he is no longer allowed to train at Leon Edwards’s gym, after the welterweight champion and his coach expressed concern over “doubts and insecurities” at Team Renegade egame
The unbeaten Machado Garry has trained at various gyms in numerous countries in recent months, but told The Independent that he will not be able to return to Renegade, at the request of Edwards and his coach Dave Lovell egame
The Irishman did, however, stress his appreciation of Ash Begg and Tom Breese, who run Team Renegade egame
“Gym conflict has absolutely been a massive issue recently,” said Machado Garry, who turns 26 in November and faces teammate Vicente Luque in December egame
“Leon Edwards, his head coach asked me not to come back to Renegade; told me I’m not allowed to train there egame
“I have to word this correctly, because I don’t wanna be… Firstly, I wanna put out there that Ash and Tom, who run Renegade… I don’t wanna give any negatives without saying a positive egame
I don’t want any s*** with any gyms egame
The guys at Renegade… it was a great energy egame
Tom and Ash were very welcoming, lovely and nice to me egame
It was nothing to do with them egame
“Leon and his head coach had an issue with me training on the mats and recently have asked me not to train there, because, ‘Leon doesn’t want any insecurities or doubts on his own mats, within the gym,’ which I don’t fully understand egame
“I get that we’re both in the top 10 and you might see me as a threat, but I’m not a threat to you right now; I’m not fighting for the title right now egame
His coach said the words: ‘Ian is a threat, I cannot have Leon having any doubts or insecurities egame
’“That makes me think someone is weak minded and can’t have another contender training on the mat egame
That’s why gym conflict is annoying egame
For me, why not have that other elite guy on the mat? Why not train with him? Why not have him push you? Why not learn and grow from each other?Machado Garry during his dominant win over Neil Magny in August (Getty Images)“It’s very irritating, because I’m a young fighter who wants to be the best in the world, who wants to train with the best in the world, and Renegade is the best gym in the UK egame
I went there to learn from the guys around Birmingham and who have essentially proven that it’s the best gym in the UK; I didn’t go there to train with Leon, I went there to train with that gym, because they’re amazing egame
“Now I’m being stopped from going to a gym, because I might potentially fight Leon in 18 months egame
My attitude is: If that’s the case, why not have this conversation in six months? “I love the guys at Renegade egame
They’re really nice and welcoming, I rang them beforehand to make sure everything was good egame
Then, after the second day I was there, they were like: ‘Oh, we can’t have you back, Leon and some of his team don’t want this egame
’ “So, when we talk about conflict, that’s it egame
There’s a piece for you to write, for sure!”The Independent has contacted Edwards, Lovell and Team Renegade for comment egame
Machado Garry last fought in August, beating Neil Magny via unanimous decision egame
The “Future” is next in action at UFC 296 in December, facing teammate Luque egame
Meanwhile, Edwards last fought in March, outpointing Kamaru Usman to retain the welterweight title that he took from his old rival with a head-kick knockout last August egame
The Birmingham fighter, 32, is due to headline UFC 296, defending his belt against former interim champion Colby Covington egame
Watch UFC 296 live on TNT egame Sports in the UK and Ireland, on Saturday 16 December egame

World Rugby has unveiled plans for a new ‘Nations Championship’ that it believes will “enhance” the men’s international game egame
The new biennial competition will begin in 2026 and feature a top division of 12 teams, comprised of the Six Nations, the four Rugby Championship sides and two more participants, likely to be Japan and Fiji egame
The winner will be determined after a series of one-off fixtures in a grand final egame
Beneath this will sit a second-tier competition run by World Rugby containing 12 more countries, but movement egame between the two divisions will not begin until 2030 egame
The competition has been made possible by a historic agreement over a global calendar, the first time this has been in place in the men’s game, which was narrowly voted through at a World Rugby Council meeting in Paris on Tuesday morning egame
A global calendar for women’s Test rugby has also been clarified egame
Additionally, the 2027 World Cup will be expanded to 24 teams, four more than were involved in this year’s tournament in France, with the draw to be held in January 2026 egame
Australia will host the tournament egame between over a six-week period egame between 1 October and 13 November egame
A Round of 16 will be introduced with the top two teams from each pool automatically qualifying along with the best four third-placed teams egame
“It is fitting that we finish Rugby World Cup 2023, the sport’s greatest celebration of togetherness, with the sport’s greatest feat of togetherness,” said Bill Beaumont, World Rugby chairman egame
“Agreement on the men’s and women’s global calendars and their content is the most significant development in the sport since the game went professional egame
A historic moment for our sport that sets us up collectively for success egame
“We now look forward to an exciting new era for our sport commencing in 2026 egame
An era that will bring certainty and opportunity for all egame
An era that will support the many, not the few, and an era that will supercharge the development of the sport beyond its traditional and often self-imposed boundaries egame
I would like to thank all my colleagues for their spirit of collaboration egame
Today, we have achieved something special egame
”World Rugby chairman Bill Beaumont announced he controversial plan (PA Archive)The new Nations Championship is likely to bring about the end of traditional touring, other than the quadrennial British & Irish Lions visits to New Zealand, Australia and South Africa egame
The new competition will be played in the July and November windows – clubs will now be required to release their players for international duty across four weeks in the northern hemisphere autumn, rather than the current three egame
One of the Six Nations rest weekends is understood to be likely to be cut from the calendar as a knock-on impact of the extension to the November window, while the Rugby Championship may move to a closer alignment with the equivalent European competition egame
Elsewhere, a revamped and expanded Pacific Nations Cup competition will begin in 2024, featuring Canada, Fiji, Japan, Samoa, Tonga and USA egame
Japan and the USA, which will host the 2031 and 2033 men’s and women’s World Cups, will alternate as finals hosts egame
A unified global calendar has long been considered the holy grail for rugby’s administrators given the issues a crowded club and country schedule provides from a player welfare perspective, while a joined-up approach should also increase the sport’s commercial potential egame
The plans have attracted significant criticism, though: under particular scrutiny has been the lack of opportunities the new calendar may provide emerging nations to test themselves against men’s rugby’s established powers egame
The president of Rugby South America, Sebastian Pineyrua, last week told the Daily Mail that it could be “the death of rugby” egame
Under the current plans, the earliest a team outside of the top 12 could gain access to the top tier would likely be 2032 egame
